Mouth on Fire: Ask to Understand

Jan. 10, 2021

This ONE THING changes the course of your life

James 3:2 We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check.

Most unruly part of the body? Mouths!

Controlling what we say is soooo difficult

James 3:3-4 We can make a large horse go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth. And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches.

Words are disproportionate

A few words can change the course of an entire life

Words are wild and unpredictable

Negative words are disproportionate in weight

The source of the words are disproportionate

James 3:5-6 But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself.

Be Careful – Your mouth’s on fire

The fire comes from within

We are all born with pilot light on

Matt. 15:18-20 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.”

You say things because you thought of them

The Evil One is actively using our words

Your mouth’s on fire

James 1:19-20 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.

Before anything else actively listen

Proverbs 1:5 A wise person will hear and increase in learning, And a person of understanding will acquire wise counsel

“Discovered that ‘either or’ decisions failed 52% of the time over the long term, versus only 32% of the decisions with two or more alternatives.” Heath and Heath

Ask to understand

Slow to anger

The longer you listen, the more you’ll learn the less angry you will become

Everything that everyone does makes sense to them
